IRF: Rehabilitation Physician Documentation Lunch-and-Learn Series
This four-part lunch-and-learn series provides physicians, physician extenders, and residents with specialized training related to the Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility Prospective Payment System (IRF PPS) and CMS’s documentation and regulatory requirements.
Session 1 (30 minutes)
- Orientation to the IRF PPS
- Case-mix group (CMG) assignment and the physician’s role in assigning CMGs
Session 2 (40 minutes)
- Impairment group code (IGC) and etiology pairings
- Supporting physician documentation and coding tips for certain IGC categories
Session 3 (40 minutes)
- Comorbid conditions, tiers, and rehabilitation impairment category (RIC) exclusion criteria
- The 60% rule and necessary physician documentation to support presumptively compliant codes
- Physician documentation and coding tips for tiered comorbid conditions and 60% compliance
Session 4 (35 minutes)
- Key requirements of the Medicare Benefit Policy Manual (MBPM)
- CMS’s “reasonable and necessary” criteria for IRF admissions
- Rehabilitation physician documentation requirements for IRF admissions, from the preadmission screen to the discharge assessment
Each session includes a handout, an instructional video, and a post-test. (A grade of 80% is required to pass.) Modules must be completed in order. A certificate of this specialized IRF PPS training is provided upon completion.
